Native American Mystery Series

Recommendations and reading order.

I like to read mystery series, starting at the beginning of the series and working my way through to the end. Some series are obvious what order to read, like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, which has a number in the the title. But others are a lot more confusing. So here I am going to start a page to help out.

My recommendations for Native American Mystery series, with a listing of the books in the series in the order to read them.

Kirk Mitchell
Series: Emmett Parker and Anna Turnipseed

Emmett Quanah Parker, half Comanche and half white, is an investigator for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. His partner, FBI agent, Anna Turnipseed is Modoc and Japanese. Together they investigate a series of mysteries revolving around Native Americans. Unlike most Native American mystery series, this series is not tied to one tribe or one reservation. It is a well written and interesting series.

  • Cry Dance

  • Spirit Sickness

  • Ancient Ones

  • Sky Woman Falling

  • Dance of the Thunder Dogs

Aimee and David Thurlo
Series: Ella Clah

Tony Hillerman with a touch of the Paranormal. Ella Clah is an ex-FBI agent now working on the Navajo police force. Excellent series.

Books in the series:

Book with Ella Clah's mother, Rose.

Aimee and David Thurlo
Series: Lee Nez

This series has all the elements I really enjoy. Great writing, a complex chase, cops and bad guys, the mystic of the Navajos and the South West, and vampires, both good and very bad.

Books in the series:

Aimee and David Thurlo
Series: Sister Agatha

I haven't read this series yet. It is about a Catholic nun living in a convent in the Southwest, but since I really like the authors' work, I will probably like this series too..

  • Bad Faith

  • Thief in Retreat
