Series: "Amelia Peabody Mysteries"
Genre and sub-genre: Mystery - Egyptian
THE GOLDEN ONE is the latest in Elizabeth Peter’s long running
mystery series about Amelia Peabody and her archeologist husband Emerson
set in Egypt at the turn of the century. While billed as mysteries,
there is plenty of romance between strong-willed modern-thinking Amelia
and her dashingly handsome husband Emerson. The series follows Amelia
and Emerson from their first romantic meeting among the ruins of ancient
Egypt, through the birth of their son Ramses and his ever dangerous
adventures, through the comings and goings of many friends and some
terrible enemies. It seems that each season when Emerson and Amelia
return to Egypt to continue their excavations of the various tombs,
pyramids, and temples, there is always a new body, always a mystery to
solve.
The current books take place during World War I. Ramses is now a
grown man, married to his beloved Neferti. More romance between these
two as well. For now the story is no longer just told from Amelia’s
point of view through her journals, but from Ramses and Neferti’s
journals and letters.
Arriving to begin excavating in Jan. 1917, their plans go awry with
rumors of looted treasure, the murder of several reported tomb robbers,
and a dying clue to an undiscovered tomb. Then along comes the British
government, trying to recruit Ramses for a secret mission into Turkish
territory. Ramses refuses until he learns the mission. A British agent
has been seen in Turkey and may have become a traitor. The British want
Ramses to identify the man and tell them if it is Sethos and kill him.
Sethos and the Emersons’ have a long history. The Master Criminal, who
was the bane of Emerson’s existence for years and who has professed
his love for Amelia time and time again, was recently revealed to be
Emerson’s half-brother, a bastard half-brother, and a British patriot,
who since the beginning of the War as served as a spy. Ramses agrees to
go on the mission, since he needs to find out the truth and help Sethos
if he can. Amelia, Emerson, and Neferti aren’t about to let him go
alone on this dangerous mission and set out disguised as a wealthy Arab
and his two wives. Will they make it out of Turkish territory alive? And
what about the undiscovered tomb? Will they find the treasure?
Elizabeth Peters is one of my absolutely favorite authors. The
continuing saga of Amelia, Emerson, Ramses, and Neferti has me hooked
and reading the next book in the series as soon as it comes out. It is a
series well worth reading, but go back and start from the beginning or
you will miss a lot.
